Korcula 2nd August

Marijana our apartment landlord meets us on the jetty and takes us to our place. It is outside the old city walls but part of the old town and up a cobblestones street. Jan is struggling with her case and the cobblestones. Fortunately it isn't far. Her place is very modest but well priced, well placed, and comfortable. We crack jokes about the jewellery we bought causing us to stay in a budget place to compensate. Once settled we go exploring. It is very hot and we find a restaurant facing the sea with a cool breeze for lunch. We order large pizzas each because it is better value but they are huge. They are also delicious. After lunch we are both stuffed to the girls with pizza and we wander around checking out the church, the old town, the beaches etc. we are too full for dinner and eventually retire about 11:00 pm after a cocktail at a bar with live music. In fact there is music in several venues and it feels great. There is a drumming sound and a group of men appear waving the Croatian flag and beating drums and holding swords. We follow them like the rats in the Pied Piper of Hamelyn fairytale. We are trying to get a photo and see what is going on. Eventually we follow till they stop and one guy invites us to have our photos with him. They are traditional folk dancers.
This place has lots of music which we find enchanting. There were three young men singing acapella style in the courtyard. Their voices were so sweet and harmonious. It is a tradition here. When we return to the apartment we can here rock and roll coming from another cafe down the street. They have siesta here so the life starts again at 6:00pm and goes to about 2:00 am. It isn't wild just laid back and low key. We love the vibe. It is a pretty place although the harbour isn't as pretty as Hvar.
